Our Experience

Instruments Downunder (IDu) was established in 2014. The company is owned and managed by James Turner whose career in Geotechnical Instrumentation and Geotechnical Site Investigation spans 34 years.

IDu can offer a highly skilled, unique and professional service specialising in Geotechnical Instrumentation Installation and Monitoring.

Our services include design and specification review, project management, instrument installation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Instruments and data logging systems.

We have extensive experience in designing and setting up data logging stations for downloading data onsite, localised wireless systems or receiving data via Telemetry.

Our niche area of expertise is installing instruments for monitoring “Soft Soil” foundations for settlement during and post embankment construction. Monitoring “Soft Soil” provides critical information for evaluating settlement and stability performance. Its crucial the monitoring data is accurate as important decisions are made based on this information. The data also provides verification of design prediction parameters and so is used as an excellent risk control tool for the project. Also if embankments are constructed near existing infrastructure then those assets can be monitored for risk control as well.

Data integrity is of the utmost importance so our numerous years of experience viewing and graphing data enables us to identify corrupt data, both ‘raw’ and formulated. One aspect that delivers good quality data is the experience of the installer to install the instruments correctly at the appropriate layers. In our experience drawing design depths are not always the best depth to install the instrument or anchor one. Due to our high level of installation experienced we custom fit the instruments in liaison with the construction design team. This approach ensures the instrument will maximise its monitoring potential. The monitoring equipment is specialist work and requires a skilled person experienced in Geotechnical Instrumentation Installation to install. We are experienced with a range of products on the market. With over 34 years installing instruments we have perfected the process knowing the tricks and risks associated with installing Instrumentation successfully. With inexperienced personnel installing instruments the higher the risk of reworks, additional costs, no data and delays with hold points which could have major impacts on the projects progress.

Additional to ‘Soft Soil’ monitoring we have extensive experience in slope monitoring and structural monitoring.

Our Geotechnical Site Investigation experienced includes Drilling Supervision, Borehole Logging (Non Core/Core), In situ field sampling & testing(u50/u75,spt), Piston Sampling, Point Load, Packer Testing (we developed accuracy in low flow/tight stratum testing), in situ Vane Shear testing, Ground Water sampling, Ground Water monitoring via data loggers and Monitoring Well installations.

With combined experience in Geotechnical Instrumentation Installation and Geotechnical Site Investigation we guarantee a high quality installation. With over 34 years of drilling supervision experience we have a complete understanding of the drilling process which is essential in preventing down-hole problems during instrument installation. This extensive experience has allowed us to improved the installation methods of most equipment and in some cases developed special tools to aid the process.

If your project requires a truly professional Install of Geotechnical Instrumentation than we are the company you should call.
